As a Dutch visual artist, I’m best known for my diverse and colourful abstract self-portraits. I portray what is going on in my head in an abstract way. Due to continuously experiencing a restless feeling between order and chaos and I’m always searching for the connection between the two. When I experience too much chaos, I let my obsessive perfectionism run free and if that structure becomes too dominant, I will add chaos again. This allows me to connect both and to create a peace of mind.
With ‘Expect Nothing, Appreciate Everything’, I continue to question contradictions that I experience, which most people take for granted. With my art I want to give new value to daily life by changing everyday recognizable things in such a way that it broadens my perspective and that of the viewer. In this series, the disproportionate placement of the colors in the Google logo triggered me to investigate further. The urge to categorize everything and the disappearance of spontaneity is the contradiction and similarity to my own thinking.
‘Expect Nothing, Appreciate Everything’ translates into new abstract self-portraits in which an interaction unfolds between straight and spontaneous lines. While in search for control, I’m constantly in danger of losing it. The colours alternate against the white paint, so that the pattern and the breakthrough are in conflict with each other. In relation to the paintings, the sound and video works indicate the creative process. By literally transforming the painted layers into sound and image, I want to take the viewer into this process, in order to experience the same as I do.
