In the heart of Amsterdam lies De Tandwielenfabriek, a former industrial complex that was repurposed for housing in 2015. For one of the twelve residences, visual artist Daan Roukens was commissioned to create a mural. Roukens created a pattern and colour combination that reflected the owner’s interests as well as the characteristic factory details. He translated the red brick, the bare wood, and the dark steel structures into a geometric pattern of parallelograms, bringing the seven-meter-high wall to life and creating his signature in-between experience within the space.

Because he constantly experiences a restless tension between order and chaos, the mural underwent a gradual transformation during the creative process. What began as a fixed pattern developed along the way. He added new colour mixtures and created unexpected connections between surfaces. The interplay between constructing a system and intentionally breaking it leads to the sublime experience Roukens continually seeks in his work.
