Located in the heart of Amsterdam, lies De Tandwielenfabriek (an old sprocket factory). This industrial complex was given a new purpose for housing in 2015. Visual artist Daan Roukens created a pattern and colour combination that reflected the owner’s interests as well as the characteristic factory details of red bricks and dark steel constructions. In addition, he translated the steel structure into a geometric pattern of parallelograms to complement the seven meter high walls. The wall painting gradually evolved over time. It started as a fixed pattern, but during the process Roukens added different colour mixtures and connected several fields of the pattern. While painting, the interaction between pattern and breaking through that pattern led to that sublime experience he is searching for.
