De Tandwielenfabriek Farrow & Ball paint on wall Commissioned 6.5 x 7 m 2016
Located in the heart of Amsterdam, lies De Tandwielenfabriek (an old sprocket factory). This industrial complex was given a new purpose for housing in 2015. For one of the twelve houses I created a wall painting. In which I gave new value to elements from the designated location. I used a color combination that follows the owner’s interests as well as characteristic factory details of red bricks and dark steel constructions. In addition, I translated the steel structure into a geometric pattern of parallelograms to complement the 7 meter high walls.
As I continuously experience a restless feeling between order and chaos. The wall painting or as I prefer the abstract self-portrait, gradually evolved over time. It started as a fixed pattern, but during the process I added different colour mixtures and connected several fields of the pattern. While painting, the interaction between the pattern and breaking through that pattern led to that sublime experience I’m always searching for. It also created a paradoxical tension between the wall painting and the surrounding space.
